The fuel consumption of diesel engines is constantly decreasing. Diesel engine, as the heat engine with the highest energy conversion efficiency, has remarkable energy saving effect compared with other power machinery. According to the latest research results, diesel engine thermal efficiency from the current 45% to 50%, emissions close to zero has the possibility of commercialization. For example, if the thermal efficiency of diesel engine is increased from 45% to 50%, the fuel consumption of the whole vehicle can be reduced by 11%, and the annual consumption of diesel oil and carbon dioxide emissions of the whole society can be reduced by about 19 million tons and 60 million tons. In the future, it is also possible to further improve the thermal efficiency of diesel engines to 55% by adopting efficient combustion and waste heat recovery technologies, thus reducing the fuel consumption of the whole vehicle by 22% on the current basis. The whole society can reduce the diesel consumption by about 38 million tons and the carbon dioxide emission by about 120 million tons every year.

The emission of pollutants from diesel engines continues to decrease. From the implementation of the National 1 emission regulation in 2000 to the implementation of the National 6 emission standard in 2019, the emission level of diesel engine products in China lagged behind Europe by two stages at the beginning of the century, and now the National 6 emission regulation has realized the leading role in the global motor vehicle pollution control standards. Compared with the 2000 China 1 diesel engine, China 6 diesel products have reduced particulate matter emissions by 97% and nitrogen oxide emissions by 95%. According to the latest research results, diesel engine emissions close to zero has the possibility of commercialization, can further reduce pollutant emissions. The next step will be to accelerate the replacement of the existing high-emission diesel products in the market through the full implementation of the State 6 emission regulations for road diesel engines and the four-stage emission regulations for non-road diesel engines, so as to promote the upgrading of consumer demand with lower fuel consumption and emissions.
